Cincinnati Wildlife Removal Tip of the Month

Squirrel Trapping
Whether you live in the country or the city, you have probably seen Cincinnati squirrels. Many people think that they are cute and fun to watch. Many folks set up feeders in their yards just to enjoy their antics. It is just not fun anymore when an infestation of squirrels moves into your yard or home. Squirrels are a rodent and their actions can be just as destructive as Ohio rats or mice. They also carry pests and are disease ridden just like mice or rats. They can chew through wiring and water lines, destroy siding and drywall, and dig up your garden in no time at all. If you have an infestation, you should get rid of them as soon as possible. The following are tips on learning about their habits, and successfully trapping them.

First, learn to understand the Cincinnati squirrel’s habits to properly identify the problem. After you determined you have a squirrel problem, the next step is choosing your method of trap. Traps that are available to catch small to medium sized mammals are your best bet. If you want to go with a lethal (killing) trap that is available, a traditional snap trap is the most effective. It is like a large rattrap. When the squirrel goes for the bait, a heavy bar slams shut on it crushing it to death. If you are inclined to go with live traps, there are varieties of them as well. They are made from heavy wire and consist of a sturdy cage with a solid door that slams shut when a pressure plate under the bait tray is triggered. Most live traps catch one Ohio squirrel at a time. The most effective type of trap we have found is an exclusion trap.

It has a “funnel” entrance that allows the Cincinnati squirrel to leave through the large end, but not return. They are even simple to make yourself from ¼-inch hardware cloth and a few screws. You can attach it to a cage as well. This allows you to catch a bunch of squirrels without having to reset the trap each time. When using any live trap, always check traps often, so that any animals trapped inside can be dealt with quickly and do not suffer needlessly. Another method of trapping Ohio squirrels is the use of a snare pole. A snare poll can be purchased commercially, or you can DIY.

This type of trap is manually operated and best used when the squirrel is contained in a small space like your attic, in pipe,or a hole in the ground. For snaring a Cincinnati squirrel you must corner it, maneuver the cable loop over its head and one leg. If it is in a pipe or hole, you position the loop loosely around that exit hole and wait for the creature to appear. When the squirrel emerges from the hole, tighten the loop around its head and one leg. Once you have encircled the creature, tighten the line, and lift the Ohio squirrel up. Always have a bag or other container ready to put the squirrel in.

Now that you have chosen your trap, you must decide where to use them, and what bait to use if needed. Once you locate the Ohio squirrel’s paths through your yard, you can find the hole that will serve as the main entrance. Placing your traps around these entrances will be the most effective. For reliable bait, use any nuts, greens, seeds, soft fleshy fruits, fresh vegetables. If you put the trap on a porch or deck where squirrels come to scavenge regularly, try using salty chips or sugary snacks. When the brave Cincinnati squirrel comes up for a handout, you will have him! If you are attempting to catch a squirrel inside a structure, it probably wants water more than food. Soft fruit slices have a strong aroma and hold a lot of moisture. They will make the perfect bait for your attic or crawlspace.
